Summertime reading

I need a recommendation for a fabulous book to read on vacation. I just don't want to waste time on a book that is not fabulous! Any suggestions? By the way, I just finished reading "Look Me in the Eye" by John Elder Robison, a man with Asperger's syndrome. It was fascinating.

Here's the Christmas letter for all you mannys who don't get it:

Dear family and friends,                                                                       Christmas 2007
I’m sure most of you at one time or another have had a Master Card moment; you know the commercial that calculates the cost of everything and then ends with “Priceless”, followed by some sentimental, often tear-provoking (well at least for some of us) scenario about the one you love.  Well, at year’s end, when I’m at the height of my emotional capacity (or instability), I thrive on recalling those priceless moments and people.  Ahh!  And peace comes in the midst of confusion.

What can be more priceless than that first word, “Dada”?  (It was always Dada first in our family!)  Or that first step, or the first precious little temper tantrum when you got a glimpse of things to come!  As many of you know we have entered the “teenager-is-almost-outta-here-what-haven’t-we-taught-him” stage of life.  My bedside table is stacked with books with titles like “Give Them Wings,” and for months, whenever I got in the car, I heard “How to communicate with your teen while teaching him to drive and simultaneously suppressing the urge to run screaming from the car.“

Well, the title was something like that.  So now we are experiencing a new level of “firsts” in our family.  We survived teaching John (yes he is 16) to drive, and have even gotten past the first car wreck.  Should be getting the car back any day now!  Oh yeah, back to the priceless moments…  watching John place 8th in the state cross country meet this fall was a definite highlight, listening to him play his guitar at home or for the worship team at youth group, and late night conversations when he comes in to tell us he’s in from his date.  Dating - another first that personally I was not quite ready for.  The list goes on, first job – a star employee of Chic-fil-a – which of course pays for the gas in the first car.  He is a lover of music and a lover of God, who could ask for more?!

One day while quietly sitting in math class, Jacob (14, 8th gr.) breaks the silence with, “Oh my gosh, I need to shave!”  And he’s been shaving ever since.  How’s that for a first?!  Let’s see, there was the first dance with a girl at school, 1st place in the all district band, and 2nd place in all region band.  He’s a percussionist by the way, playing everything from 4-mallet marimba to drum set, to the tympani, which I think is his favorite – he doesn’t need a pitch pipe to tune them.  Of course there are the video game related firsts that only he could describe.  He asked me the other day if he would be able to play games when he is married and has kids.  I told him that he probably would be able to, and after much contemplation he declared that he would have to hide the “M” games like Halo and only let his kids play educational games.  That’s Jacob – he knows the rules and he’s sticking to them!

Every day I have the awesome privilege of walking out my front door and down the street to meet Rachel (9, 4th gr.) coming home from school.  Now I don’t have to go very far to know she’s coming, because I can usually hear the shrieking, chanting, or singing from afar.  Most of Rachel’s waking moments are spent entertaining in song, dance, storytelling, or cartoon drawing.  Firsts include talking on the phone as soon as she gets home and vying for computer time, both of which are shadows of days to come.  I love that she still cuddles, still wants me to tuck her in at night, still adores purple, and loves Christmas decorating, movie watching, and baking as much as I do.  And yet she still wants to be a doctor when she grows up!  Daddy’s girl!

Peace is a priceless commodity these days.  I find it most when I choose to stop long enough to express a heart of gratitude to the one in whom I place my trust, the one whose ways are not always my ways, but whose mercies are new every morning.   May you find priceless moments of peace and joy this holiday season.
“And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”  Phil. 4:7

Currently Reading
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1)
By J.K. Rowling
see related

Popping in ever so briefly to Houston tomorrow.  John should get plenty of driving practice in and then its on to the Frio River for one last summer fling with Declan's family.  More driving practice for John.  (We would all appreciate your prayers!)  He's hoping to get his license when school starts.  We'll see....

After being badgered by many, namely my sister, I have begun the infamous series.  I am reading Harry Potter (yes, book 1) to Rachel right now.  We should be on book 2 at the Frio.  Another good summer read was Cold, Sassy Tree.  I loved the cantankerous grandfather and the southern dialect.

Hope to see many of you in Austin at ACL......

My son John has officially entered the workforce.  This Saturday he will become none other than an employee of Chick-fil-a.  I just have one question...  Can we get free milkshakes?

So, what was your first job?
